Images of Drake - Artist from 3rd textual analysis

3rd textual analysis

Drake - Forever

The video starts of by high pitched sound accompanied by flames of fire, Drake starts singing, Flashing lights and slow motion cuts shots of the other artists accompaning Drake in the song, Lil Wayne, Kanye West & Eminem.

Cut shots from Drake to the Club, 0.46 into the song, women come out looking for Drake, first verse kicks off from Drake, vibrant colours and major hip hop atmosphere, cuts to Labron James, basketball player which the song is made for documentary of his life.
Vidoe continues for the next 30 seconds of cut shots from Drake to Lebron James.

1.41 chorus kicks in, more shots of the documentary are shown, for the viewers to be clearn that this is the o.s.t from the Lebron James documentary, more cut shots from Drake singing the chorus to picture of Lebron James as a kid.

at 2.00 chrous finishes and Kanye West verse starts.
Again consecutive shots as cuts are made from Kanye West to clips of the documentary.

Chorus kicks back in at 3.10 cuts back to Drake and clips of documentary.

3.34 into the video, Lil Wayne verse kicks in, multipal shots are used of the surrounding to show what is happning in the video as it is a different location to where Drake and Kanye west had there verses.
Again repetative shots from Lil wayne and Documentary.
Shot of alcohol was shown on the bar, very expensive vodka, Circo.

4.56 Eminen verse kicks in, they had a few extra shots before the verse because he is also in a different location outside, Eminems verse finished at 5.54 and comes to the ending of Drake singing the chorus.

end of song.

The reason I used tis song as my 3rd peice of textual analysis, because it has many similarities with Pih's video as they are very simple, and Drake has very recently about a 6 months ago been discovered by Cash Money records & has been highly succesful since then, which is what Pih is trying to do in the Polish Music Industry.

Costumes and Props

Our props were used to enhance the realism and the of the location that we chose to be in, in our studio shot, we have professional headphones and a microphone on a stand to show that Denis Biela is on the rise by getting studio time.

we also used the inside of the studio i.e mixers, computers to show that I was recording the music.

We used a phone (Sony Ericsson Xperia X1) for the phone conversation between Denis Biela (the artist) and myself Harim John (the producer).

We also used piano keys inbetween shots just to show different instruments and props used, we also used notepads to show the Artist Denis Beila writing down his ideas looing up to the sky.

We had Denis working in his work place with his uniform on to show that he is working hard to get studio time and become something in the music industry.

Cast

This was the cast that we used for the creation of our A2 coursework, Myself, Denis Biela & Akeesh Khokhar.

Risk assesment

These are the shots where we could of been injured & where health and safety was one of our main priorities.

There was several risk elements which we had to consider such as the shot where Denis aka Pih ( the artist) had to walk down the stairs, those stairs were very slippery and very steep, so that was on shot we had to be carful from, another shot is where Denis was on the balcony where we needed to take a few shots to increase the variation, it was very uneven there, so we placed the camera and tripod and made slight movements around there, as a health and safety precaution.

We also had another shot where I myself was on a chair shooting, as Akeesh Khokhar, walked into Denis Biela, this shot may seem rather straight forward, but some preshots showed that Denis could of been injured as the shoulder barge was relatively hard to enhane the realism & at any point somebody could of opened to door, which could of led to me losing my balance.

Another shot was the stairs shot, as we kept the camera at a very high, angled place to get the right shot, where not only somebody could of got seriously hurt if the camera fell on them but also the very expensive equipment could of been damaged.

Genre is essentially a system of repetition and variation

“Genre is essentially a system of repetition and variation “

Our AS coursework was a drama based movie, it was how youths are stereotypically in this day and age, we represented them negatively as a majority of the youth is based nowadays, we was able to establish this through mise-en-scene through the location we allocated to shoot in and through the clothes we offered them to wear i.e. hoody and baggy jeans.

In our AS piece, Repetition was a key factor, which allowed us and gave us the chance to enhance what genre we were intending to do, our AS piece was based on stereotypical British teens, the above statement is true on the sheer fact that in a genre you have to keep emphasising on the theme to give the viewers a clear and accurate point on what genre the movie is and what is intended through the shots.
Once genre has been picked, you need to stick to the genre through repetition of the shots and emphasis through the actions of the characters to embed in the minds of the viewers what genre it is, as our AS piece was based on action/drama, we had scenes of youth harassing one another, starting on each other and having fights, which is fairly stereotypical and we also had to see where we could shoot to enhance the realism so we shot in a near by park, where we used of variation of shots to show where the chases took place etc, coming back to repetition, this will mostly be done through the characters, for example in our movie we tried to make them look like a thug, so he had his trousers low, his hood up and gave him the sense of attitude that he didn’t care what anyone had to say or do, so we had to keep at it throughout the whole movie as we needed to keep to his character and also keep him at the point where we didn’t fall out of our genre, also through repetition we are allowed to interact with our viewers, as our target audience was a niche market & they would also very likely fall into situations as our characters did.
Variation helps in movies like ours because we have a very simple genre and the actual concept of the genre has many simple takes and shows, of course you can make more shots seem more drastic than others, but you don’t only need variation of shots to show different angles but also to keep the viewers keen, because with drama movies, majority of the time you will get a very similar story line with a twist in the ending so through this we will of needed to keep the viewers keen.
Through our AS coursework we believe that genre is a system of repetition and variation as it shows that these are key aspects which we need to apply to be able to get our point through to viewers, which has a major impact through repetition.

This is a few images from Lil Waynes ideo featuring Static Major, this will give a bit of a clearer view of what I ment in My textual Analysis.

2nd Textual analysis

Lil Wayne - lollipop

Video starts off with a lit up view of New York city, which then allows the beat to kick in, where Lil Wayne is standing in the bathroom getting ready, this shot shows him getting ready to go party, couple of cut shots of different women, that will potentially will be going out with him, then a more close up, story telling shot of him shacking some lollipops, then a few more shots emphasising women as stereyotypical hip hop women, with their big breasts, playing around with money.

The main verse is mixed between Lil Wayne and Static major, so once the chorus kicks in their are several cut shots of the two artists.

Lil Wayne and Static Major are shown to be ready at 0.34 into the video which shows them getting ready to go into the limo, which has just been pulled up outside their mansion, then the second shot is a women dressed in lingerie whom is the driver to go open the door for the pair this is at 0.41 seconds into the video.

A shot that follows through the limo shows the mass amount of women waitin upon the arrival of Lil Wayne and Static Major, several close up of women to emphasise on their beauty, but also shows how typical hip hop women and how they are used as objects and props to premote the artist and the single.

Flashing lights are used to set the theme of a party going inside of the limo, this is very obvious because they lights only started as Lil Wayne and Static major came into the Limo.

1.03 seconds it shows that Lil Wayne has started rapping & a large amount of women start jumping all over him as the limo is shown to be driving around New York City, which is a fairly stereyotypical movie as it shows how hip hop artist lives thier life, spending unbeliable amounts of money on showing off what they can afford and women.

1.31 minutes it shows Lil Wayne ontop of the Limosine, driving through New York City, rapping about all the women, money, cars etc he has had, A guitar scene comes where we the guitar starts playing and through the cut shot it shows that Lil Wayne is playing along to the song.

In the video they show all the worldwide popular luxuries around the world, giving us the message that Lil wayne and Static Major visit all the sites, such as Palm Springs hotel, Casino's showing how American hip hop artist live the life.

At 2.04 minutes it shows that they have arrived at a well lit up Mansion where Birdman ( Lil Wayne's dad) is at the entrance of the party welcoming them in, once again flashing light and vibrant colours are shown as they have been partying and are looking to have a good time, in the mansion with a large amount of women.

As the video is called lollipop one shot is allowed to emphasise a women laying on a vast amount of lollipops, this shot was taken from a birdseye view at 2.52 minutes, then the video goes on for another 2 minutes, with the same concept, of women and the chorus and a dedication to Static Major whom died shortly after filming his first proper Hip hop video into the Music industry.

Textual Analysis

Killaz Group-Pod Blokiem/Jestem Szejkiem
Pod Blokiem/Jestem szejkiem by Killaz Group was directed by Dariusz Szermanowicz. The video was made to promote a movie about Polish hip-hop/rap culture called “Blokersi” and was also a promo to a first mainstream album by Killaz Group called “Nokaut”.

The video starts off very simply, with a flame to introduce the song, then the rapper is standing thier next to a barrel which is alight and rapping next to it.
He is very stereyotypical with his hand gestures and his baggy clothing.
He is in a dark and deserted area, which looks derelict in the way that the doors are rusty, their is debris all over the floor, thier is a similiar video, from an American artist, with the same concept as this video, Eminems music video Beautiful, it gives the same sort of vibe.

The video has not been constructed and navigated very well as thier is a few different shots, where the artist is rapping but the camera is behind a crane trying to take shots of him rapping.
Then come in the second two rappers, it is the same sort of surounding, however they are outside, also with typical hip hop clothing, baggy clothes, slanghted hats etc, they have a few cut shots int he video half way where they have shots of them greeting their freinds on the streets, then it cuts back to the artist, then they cut back to the crowd of freinds who are standing thier looking intimidating, then they do a crane shot just to emphasise how many of their freinds are actually thier with them.
The third and last artist come into the video, where he is in also the same sort of surrounding to keep the vibe of the video going, he also acts like a stereyotypical rapper, with the baggy clothes and all the hand gestures, the video itself isn't as stereyotypical as an american video but holds the concept of simplicity and keep the video to a minimal as it doesn't to anything extreme, just a few simple cuts from artist to artist, and a few props such as the Barrel on fire.
Synopsis

We decided to go with the Polish rap group called Killaz Group. The song we are going to make a music video of is Manewry.Intro of the song:Lead singer walks towards the camera, with the car headlights shining behind him, making him appear as a shadowy figure. We will need to show two more artist entering the set, we will either do it the same as the lead singer entrance(one after another) or come up with different ones. All the entrances will be shown in slow motion, we will also use jump cuts.Chorus:In the song the chorus appears 4 times, so we will try to come up with different way to perform the chorus each time, different set up, people etc. Person performing the chorus is the lead artist so we will have to keep this factor the same, we were thinking of choosing different locations for each chorus, different clothes, the way people move and act. During the chorus we want the whole set to sing the lyrics with the artist and while doing so, bouncing and moving around in typical to rap genre way. The other two artist will appear in every chorus as well as in the rest of the video but the focus will be on the artist currently rapping.
A2 media Studies

In A2 media studies, we was given two options of which we would prefer to do, either a music video or a short film, me and my other group member Denis Biela have decided to do a music video, simply because we had a go at a short film in AS which we didnt think worked really well for us & we are both fairly intrested in making a music video, however we need to make the decision of which language we would prefer to do it in, English or Polish.
The reason for this is that Denis and two other people intend to Lip Synch the rap & they would rather prefer to do it in polish as it is their first language and they we think that this alternatively would be beneficial, for our group i.e getting us a better grade.

The initial idea is to keep it a simple video, however on the verge of a typical music video, we want to make it reasonably realistic, i.e with the props etc.
We are going to have flashing lights etc to create the effect of illusion in a way.

Story boards for Neva Walk Alone

We used the location in Windsor, as it was local for us & we knew the people that live in windsor would relate to it straight way, the reason we picked the park was because we needed open space for the chases etc.

This is the type of clothing we expected to use, as in several drama movie or shows, you will see youth dressed like this, we used this to enhance the realism and so that our viewers can relate to the video

This is the image of the camera that we have used in the prodcution of Neva walk alone, we used this because Denis was more comfortable and more happier using it.

Here you can see that the mise-en-scene was very simple, as it should be for a low budget film that has taken place in London, the mise-en-scene should be simple so that people can relate to them and thier outfit & say that they have those clothes, trainer etc.

Here you can see that the genre is blatenly Drama, through the location as they are in a council estate, with guns and baseball bats, about to create havoc.

Opening Sequence For Drama Genre

I had to redo this as we changed our genre for our final coursework peice, that is why i changed the opening sequence from thriller to Drama, the movie I used was Adulthood.

OPENING SEQUENCE OF ADULTHOOD

In the opening sequence, credits are show, by saying who the film was produced by (Cipher films), then it shows the some of the sponsors of the film (UK film council) it then goes to the next clip which shows the distribution company whom are Pathe and also associated with Limelight, then it comes to the creator of the film & who’s initial idea it was ( Noel Clarke) then it starts of the movie with flashbacks from Kidulthood, showing some of the main characters such as Jay, Moonie & Sam, these flashbacks are shown to remind the viewers of what previously happened, as Sam killed Trevor with a base ball bat, then a long low pitched drowsing sound appears when there is a birds eye view of all the action and as the police are arriving whilst Sam stands their shocked, this flashback was roughly 1 minute long which explained for the viewers that have not seen Kidulthood, what Adulthood is all about.
Whilst siren type music is being played to create the atmosphere of a rave, writing appears slanted to catch the viewers attention saying “six years later” which is six year after the death of Trevor.
A long take of traffic passing is taken then a cut is made towards the rave which is taking place, this is the first main scene in adulthood, several different shots are taken, from people dancing, to people kissing & people taking drugs.
Several different cuts are made during this scene which lasted about 2 minutes to catch the atmosphere of the place & to show what is going on at this rave.
Two main characters are introduced at this point, Omen , who is represented as a typical black male, living in London flat estates & Dabz a part of Omen’s crew, who have intent of robbing a wealthy rich man whom has approached their estate, they smash the car window and rob this man & in the process end up shooting him and running away, then the credits come up saying “Adulthood”, which is the first introduction to one the of main characters Sam, who was sentenced for 6 years for killing Trevor, all of this has taken place in 3 minutes and 42 seconds.

The characters are constructed in a manner which many teenagers can relate to know days, as they have the same style of speaking and the clothes and location are also very similar.
The characters have been constructed very carefully, as they have some sort of scenario that we heard of on a regular basis in the news i.e. youth murdered in gun crime, this was shown in Omen’s bedroom, where Sam came to the reality that his little brother is involved with gun crime & how Omen was so easily robbing a laptop out of a car in broad day light, this can be reflected to many of the youngsters now days as several youngsters are carrying knives and involved in gun crime on a daily basis.
Some of the characters have been shown in a very negative manner and some in a very positive manner, such as Dabs is shown as a boy who is willing to harm people in order to make money, which was show when he accepted £3000 pounds from Jay to kill Sam, he also showed that he was very crafty and manipulative as he tricked Omen into potentially killing his own brother.
On the other hand we have characters such as Sam who where bullies, Rapist and thugs, who destroyed life on a regular basis, but in Adulthood he was portrayed as a man not a boy, who thought twice before making decisions and avoided trouble and tried to make peace for his actions.
The main purpose of picking such different characteristic characters was so that the audience could relate and somehow reflect their lives into the action taking place within the movie.

The opening scene shows us that the movie will be based in a estate, as they are having a party in some garages, it seems to be an abandoned area, which shows that they are not going to clubs etc but having a party where and when they can, however there is a slight indication of what the general locations will be used, because it is a drama genre movie, so we know that it will relate to lower/middle classed people so it will be based in areas that we would consider to be slums, which it is, as some of the main locations are areas such as Brixton and London, these are the areas which are ideal for a movie such as Adulthood.

There is a very limited amount of shots taken in the opening sequence, they have used cuts shots the most commonly and at a very fast pace to give us different effects and make the mood abit distorted as there is bright flashing lights & fast paced music being played, From the credits the first shot of Adulthood was a Crane shot which panned across the screen to make a different atmosphere which showed several different shots taking place, i.e. dancing, smoking drugs etc.
They also have an eye line match of where the Indian boy bumps into the girl and she locks eyes with him and walks up to him and then it is shown that she was looking at him, there is also another eye line match when the car pulls up and then it goes back and forth cut shots from the car to Omen and the crew.
The main shots taken on the opening scene where cut shots, which allowed us to see the whole location in which the establishing shot, took place.
The editing in the opening sequence worked perfectly, as their was faced paced cuts which went perfectly along with the backing soundtrack, the editing also allowed us to see the whole location that the opening scene was in and also let us see what kind of things that the youth where getting up to, which gives us a good idea what the film will be based on and what we can expect from the film.

The sound in the opening sequence is used to create a mood which gets you pumped as it is grime based music and the fast and sharp cut shots help to create that mood for us, the dialogue between the characters is very aggressive and impolite to one another as it seems that they are arguing in the manner that they speak in but are actually just generally talking to their friends as they would in a day to day basis.
As Omen and Dabs approach the car, the dialogue become clearer and the music become muffled & just about when they are about the smash the car window, it all goes quiet so that we can hear every detail that goes on, as they shoot the guy that has been mugged, the image starts fading away but the music become louder as it goes to the credits to where Adulthood is shown.
The opening credits where effective as they where placed at a slight angle at which they viewers will look at them even more carefully, however they was abit small and if their was some sort of sound in the background, it would have been better, as it would have been more eye catching and more people would have been more attentive. However they did have something that was unique, once the credits came up, the bumped as a heart beat which was something interesting and unique. However the credits could have been longer and more eye-catching and something more colour.

Final Draft Of The Evaluation

Question 1 of the evaluationOur movie clip is fairly stereotypical of its genre, we have tried to catch similarities from the huge box office film adulthood, we had a very young cast as we intended to bring across our point without making it very obvious, as we have selected the thriller genre, we had to have characters which could help us achieve this to the fullest extent, we set our film in a familiar setting to which we thought would reflect not only the movie adulthood but also the momentum we are trying to capture, we have also kept sound to a very minimal, as their isn't going to be much conversation in a scene where somebody is getting beaten up and robbed for their mobile phone, which also helped us enhance the realism, this was going to be helped by us leaving out any or bringing the communications between the characters to a minimal and enhance all the attention onto the actual action. In our clip their aren’t many significant objects, which reflect on the actual scene or what we are actually trying to achieve, which we actually need to work on, because it will allow us to make our point more obvious and allow us to focus on objects which could be significant to different characters. One of our main conventions used in our clip was the sudden attack, which turned into a mugging, this shows a very common occurring in a thriller, as events like these make the thriller what they are.
The way we have stuck to the convention of a drama by sticking to a steady soundtrack which we created on garage band, which in a way relates to the actions of the characters, we stuck to the basic ideas of a drama movie as our characters were fairly stereotypical as they was represented in a very negative manner as their was one that was shown as a thief and one shown as a victim, which was also shown in the huge UK based film adulthood, where the man Sam was shown as a bully a dominant character and Jay was shown as the boy trying to shine, but always discourage and hurt by Sam’s words and actions. Also we had to think about the mise-en-scene which we had to consider, to make it as realistic, for our target audience, this was done through the process of where we had to find a allocated location to see where youth, hang around and we thought of the clothes they would of chose to wear, that is why we decided to get our clothing from the JD store located in Windsor high street, so that people can look at our video and think that we have the same clothes in their closet & see that there is similar scenarios that happen on an everyday occasions.
Question 2 of the evaluationin our clip, teenagers where represented in a negative and stereotypical manner, our main male group was targeted between the age of 16-20.As in our clip you can see that they are young polish lads, whom are committing pain and murder amongst themselves, the polish boys in our clip where represented very negatively as they showed hate and anger towards one another, which developed into someone’s death. How these characters was represented was negatively, and this was mainly through mise-en-scene as they where walking around with their hoods on, swearing and talking highly aggressively not only towards one another but towards anyone whom made eye contact with them.Through these few opening scenes it makes us one to concentrate on the characters more as we know that most of their dialogue is in their mother tongue, which also makes us wary about what is actually going on here.
Our media work represents a polish social group, from the age of 14-18, as our group that is being represented is a young polish group, we decided to show them in a very stereotypical manner, as we have two main characters, melosh and Michael, Michael has been portrayed as a victim to muggings that happen on a regular basic, this helped us enhance the realism and show how young polish youths have been shown living in this environment and how these survive on a day to day basis.
We had the intention of getting to involve several different individuals, so that our niche audience could expand the slightest bit, if we could relate from individuals from different backgrounds, this would of helped us, as not only would our fan base would of become bigger, but also we could of increased our profit margin & also have the chance to maybe think about maybe another movie. Question 3 of the evaluationThe media institution most likely to promote and actually release our movie would be a company such as cipher, as our movie targets a niche market, as we are making a very basic low budget movie, our promotional campaign would cost us at a very minimal price, rough based at about £10,000 which would make a whole promotional campaign, as our movie would be based within the United Kingdom, in certain urban areas, where we could get our main target audience to be attracted and in ways be hyped to watch our movie. We have seen how successful Adulthood was in the industry with its target audience, however we believe if we achieve the targets that we have made, we could be on of the United kingdoms biggest every urban youth video ever. The main purpose we intend to go with companies such as cipher is that, our cast will be local youngsters same as Adulthood, which will obviously be low budget characters trying to earn themselves a name, location shall not be a problem because we are trying to get a fell of life within the streets for youngsters which also saves us money, that is why we need a company like cipher who can help us promote our movie and make us maximum profit.
We had to consider many things about the distribution for neva walk alone, as we had to think about what would be the best way of getting our niche audience interested and anticipating our movie, we done this mainly through our cast, as you will very rarely or never find a UK based film with all polish cast members, so we had a large amount of polish customers waiting upon, neva walk alone, however we needed to attract more of our target audience, which we did through advertisements such as banners and poster, mainly around London & several other locations, where we thought that our movie could attract a large audience, locations we also considered to target our market at was Luton, Birmingham, Southall, Brixton, Slough & Scotland and several more, we thought that these locations would help us in attracting our niche market for neva walk alone.

Question 4 of the evaluationOur main target audience is for youngsters from the age of 15-28 mainly because our movie rating is going to be an 15 and many people in their late 20's will be able to relate to these situation which will be highly emphasised in the movie. We are mainly targeting our movie at the male gender as it is more of a manly movie, however we are going to have girl characters which will be able to express views of girls, not only in a negative manner, but in a manner which gives a two sided view of the situation being exposed. The main areas we intend to promote our movie is where we think this movie will be the biggest hits, such as urban areas in London such as Kilburn where movies such as adulthood where a great success, these are the type of areas we intend to promote our movie in the United Kingdom.
We knew what our movie would be marketed to a niche market and it would help us to do questionnaires such as ask our target audience between, 15-28 mainly male participants, of which film they would like to see, i.e. which genre they would enjoy the most, the options where between thriller, horror & drama, the most commonly picked on for ourselves was drama, which we understood and decided to go along with that genre, as we decided that in a drama genre movie, actors can be themselves, a lot of our actors live the lifestyles that we portrayed them as, so for us doing a drama film was ideal, as we could use these characters to reflect onto our audience, which we hope has worked as expected. Question 5 of the evaluationAs we are making a small UK based movie, it is important that we attract as much audience as possible, the main way of doing this could be through getting small time artist based in the UK which have a great influence on our target market age, we considered many artist such as Sway, Giggs & Bashy these where some of the artist which we could of considered to do for our soundtrack of the movie, the most important ones for these where the pre production and the post production as we will need characters which can relate to the audience which we need to get to attract our main target audience.
The main way of us attracting our cast was through the a cast & how we explained the movie to them from advertisement, we knew that in drama genre movies, our potential customers will want to see movies which they can relate to, they would want to hear music that they would want to see on a regular basis, that is why we took the extra few steps to make sure that through our cast, advertisement & through our music displayed before during and after the movie, that it could somehow reflect on our audience lives to make then want to watch neva walk alone.

Question 6 of the evaluationIn the process I have learned of how to use such software such as first cut express, which we did all of our editing by & also has been a good experience of using garage band, which helped us to create the scene & atmosphere by adding the different pieces of music at different tempos.Using a digital still camera is more complexes than it seems as their is more to do when you are creating a piece of coursework which you cannot allow the camera to tilt, move freely by swaying from left to right, their is several things which we had to consider to make this as perfect as possible. The main advantage from this was that I didn’t know how to use garage band of final cut express at all, now I have a good idea of how to use both, which could help me in further production I may have to do for Media Studies, as mentioned before, when we first started the production of the movie, we knew, well I personally knew that I myself wouldn’t know how to edit this movie and add the soundtrack, that is why Denis played a big role in this department as he is involved in music production and knows how to edit movies into perfect sequence, so through that I picked up several different features about editing & also learned how to make a simple beat from garage band, to match the genre that we was filming. Question & of the evaluationSince our preliminary task, we have made vast improvements, as we have focused a lot more on our filming techniques and on rules such as the 180 degree rule, which we actually broke in the preliminary task, we also used a better location, which actually gave us more space instead of cramming a majority of our shots in one area.We also planned our shots more carefully and executed them more accurately, we also had many more continuity errors, which we have none in this one, i.e. we had several problems with costume, as that was our main continuity error & also with several different shots which would start at a completely different angle which would make the 1st and 2nd shot completely different & also in this one after our preliminary task we have used several different shots and different camera angle views which made it better for us and allowed us to explore into the media world abit more.

Overall our preliminary task was very poor compared to Neva walk alone, so it should have been, as we picked up many little features and effects and different camera shots which we should of used in the preliminary task, we also had more experience and had planned Neva walk alone much better to a high quality and standard, which got a higher mark.

(First draft) Evaluation

Question 1 of the evaluation

Our movie clip is fairly stereyotypical of its genre, we have tried to catch similarites from the huge box office film adulthood, we had a very young cast as we inteneded to bring across our point without making it very obvious, as we have selected the thriller genre, we had to have charactors which could help us acheive this to the fullest extent, we set our film in a familiar setting to which we thought would reflect not only the movie adulthood but also the momentum we are trying to capture, we have also kept sound to a very minimal, as thier isn't going to be much conversation in a scene where somebody is gettin beaten up and robbed for thier mobile phone, which also helped us inhance the realism.
In our clip their arn't many significant objects, which reflect on the actual scene or what we are actualy trying to acheive, which we actually need to work on, because it will allow us to make our point more obvious and allow us to focus on objects which could be significant to different charactors.
One of our main conventions used in our clip was the sudden attack, which turned into a mugging, this shows a very common occuring in a thriller, as events like these make the thriller what they are.

Question 2 of the evaluation

In our clip, teenagers where represented in a negative and stereyotypical manner, our main male group was targetted between between the age of 16-20.
As in our clip you can see that they are young polish lads, whom are commiting pain and murder amongst themselves, the polish boys in our clip where represented very negatively as they showed hate and anger towards one another, which developed into someones death.
How these charactors was represented was negatively, and this was mianly through mise-en-scene as they where walking around with their hoods on, swearing and talking highly aggresivly not only towards one another but towards anyone whom made eye contact with them.
Through these few opening scenes it makes us one to concentrate on the charactors more as we know that most of their dialougue is in their mother toungue, which also makes us wary about what is actually going on here.

Question 3 of the evaluation

The media institution most likely to promote and actually release our movie would be a company such as cipher, as our movie targets a niche market, as we are making a very basic low budget movie, our promotional campaign would cost us at a very minial price, rough based at about £10,000 which would make a whole promotional campaign, as our movie would be based within the United Kingdom, in certain urban areas, where we could get our main target audience to be attaracted and in ways be hyped to watch our movie.
We have seen how succesful Adulthood was in the industry with its target audience, however we belive if we acheive the targets that we have made, we could be on of the United kingdoms biggest every urban youth video ever.
The main purpose we intend to go with companies such as cipher is that, our cast will be local youngsters same as Adulthood, which will obviously be low budget charactors trying to earn themselves a name, location shall not be a problem because we are trying to get a fell of life within the streets for youngsters whcih also saves us money, that is why we need a company like cipher who can help us promote our movie and make us maximum profit.

Question 4 of the evaluation

Our main target audience is for youngsters from the age of 15-28 mainly because our movie rating is going to be an 15 and many people in their late 20's will be able to relate to these situation which will be highly emphasised in the movie.
We are mainly targettitng our movie at the male gender as it is more of a manly movie, however we are going to have girl charactors which will be able to express views of girls, not only in a negative manner, but in a manner which gives a two sided view of the situation being exposed.
The main areas we intend to promote our movie is where we think this movie will be the biggest hits, such as urban areas in London such as Kilburn where movies such as adulthood where a great success, these are the type of areas we intend to promote our movie in the United Kingdom.

Question 5 of the evaluation

As we are making a small UK based movie, it is important that we attarct as much audience as possible, the main way of doing this could be through getting small time artist based in the UK which have a great influence on our target market age, we considered many atrist such as Sway, Giggs & Bashy these where some of the artist which we could of considered to do for our soundtrack of the movie, the most important ones for these where the pre production and the post production as we will need charactors which can relate to the audience which we need to get to attract our main target audience.

Question 6 of the evaluation

In the process I have learned of how to use such software such as first cut express, which we did all of our editing by & also has been a good experience of using garage band, which helped us to create the scene & atmosphere by adding the different peices of music at different tempos.
Using a digital still camera is more complexed than it seems as thier is more to do when you are creating a peice of coursework which you cannot allow the camera to tilt, move freely by swaying from left to right, their is several things which we had to consider to make this as perfect as possible.
The main advantage from this was that I didnt know how to use garage band of final cut express at all, now I have a good idea of how to use both, which could help me in further production I may have to do for Media Studies.

Question & of the evaluation

Since our preliminary task, we have made vast improvements, as we have focused alot more on our filiming techniques and on rules such as the 180 degree rule, which we actually broke in the preliminary task, we also used a better location, which actually gave us more space instead of cramming a majority of our shots in one area.

This is the Apron we shall use to show that the murderer is a mentalist & going to any extent to take revenge for his brother.

We will need a similiar bottle of fake blood, to acheive the the graphic and effects that we need.

This is the sort of Face mask we need, to hide the identity of the murderer.
Panic Room Essay

Panic room is a movie based on claustrophobia, this movie represents characters such as Jodie foster who plays the character of Meg Altman and her daughter Kirsten Stewart who plays her daughter Sarah.
The atmosphere of claustrophobia is created through cameras slowly cornering the cameras, the main theme of this film is a thriller & the film is based on the atmosphere of claustrophobia as the main character Meg Altman is claustrophobic & as burglars enter the home, she enters the panic room as a place of safety but makes a mistake.

The main characters for the movie are Meg Altman (Jodie foster) & her daughter Sarah (Kirsten Stewart) the panic room was in introduced by to us as both mother and daughter went house hunting after the divorce from Meg’s wealthy husband, from the first sighting of the panic room from Meg she had a weird vibe which was shown to us.
The director of the movie was David Fincher, who based the movies theme on claustrophobia.

The first main glimpse and introduction we got of Meg and Sarah was when the estate agent took them into the house, this was where we started finding out about their characters.

The main establishing shot, was when Meg went into the panic room for the very first time, this was probably the main shot in the whole film as we knew that she was claustrophobic, which gave it more of an edge, through this we knew what the basis of the film would be, mainly because of the purpose of the panic room was to be in safety if any danger would occur in the house.

One of the main indications of the storyline came from one of the first scenes, as Meg was viewing the master bedroom and saw that the room was small being the master bedroom & as soon as Meg heard the 2 words panic room, she seemed worried and very shocked, this scene was where it all started from and shows what the films basis will be.

The indication of the films genre comes from the movies title and in the in the first few scenes when you see Meg being introduced to the panic room and its functions, this shows that their isn’t a major problem with the panic room as Sarah was highly fond of the panic room, but as Meg is claustrophobic, it had a bigger impact on her.

The theme of Panic room was a mixture between scenes as when they was rushing around the house for example to get to the panic room it was very upbeat tempo & on the other hand when they are trying to break into the panic room it goes very low tempo with a very low echo sound, several different sounds where used to build different atmosphere. - 1 -

By Harim John
Evaluation on preliminary task by Harim, Dennis & Zaman

What preparation was undertaken before the preliminary task?

Firstly we had to make a decision what our main theme was gone be, for example we made a short clip of a suspense theme as we ended it in a cliff-hanger as know one knew what was actually in the document, this was one of the first steps we had to take before we could go to the next step, then we had to think of a location of where would be the most convenient and convincing place for us to be able to interact with our viewers, this is why we used room 15 as it had the sort of vide be was looking for, such as a dimmed light kind of effect which went with the theme we where going for.
Finally once we had find out what kind of theme we where going for & where we was going to shoot it, we needed to find out which one of us where going to be the main characters and what roles we would play, as myself and Denis became the main characters all that was left to be done was to draw up the story boards and plan each scene out, this was all the preparation needed to be done, as all equipment was provided to us, so now we was ready to shoot out movie clip.

Where did we shoot?

We shot in the business studies room, which seemed like the perfect location for us, as we needed a room which had the right atmosphere for us as it was light dimmed with beams of light coming through the blinds which in a way makes it feel like a the kind of environment where people would have a serious conversation about life changing decisions such as lending big sums of money or drug deals for example and as we had a suspense theme going on with a thug kind of vide, this room seemed like the perfect location, we all agreed on this as a group.

What equipment have you used?

Their was two main pieces of equipment we used, one was the video camera which was provided to us by Mr Titheridge & the other main one was the document that we used which was basically the core of our production, as the whole scene built up to the viewing of the folder by myself, this was the main equipment used by us, however we also needed to use the Apple laptops provided to us also by Mr Titheridge to upload our movie and edit it and also add background music if we wish to, these where the main pieces of equipment we used for the production of our video.

What went well?

As this was our first ever short movie clip we had to make without and help in the actual production, we actual production itself went really well as nun of us have got any experience of how to actually edit movies which worked really well for us, as we thought that we would have had a great difficulty in actually constructing the movie by finding an ideal location, and actually sticking to the initial idea we had through the story boards, which I personally was impressed by myself and my team that we worked well and got out task done in the specific time period which we were provided with.

What difficulties did we face?

Well as one of the tasks was to do a shot reverse shot & get a shot of different angles, this would have been virtually impossible, as we only had a group of 3 and 2 of them being the main actors, we needed a extra person to help us with the production, to pull of the task of shot reverse shot etc, as we needed to find an extra individual, this was very time consuming and was a long procedure and also cut into our production time which was a great downfall, also as we knew about stuff like 180 degree rule we broke this rule maybe through lack of time or maybe the inexperience of how to actually conduct the move, which was a bit of a problem & also another major problem we was faced with that we needed the cameras to switch at the perfect time so that we could get the clip to look as smooth as possible, which didn’t actually go as intended, however we did well for our first time production.

How could we improve it?

We could have defiantly improved it on a major scale by doing something as minor as better time management, this would of allowed us to sit in the environment we shot in and plan out everything in the room i.e. where the camera man should be standing in this shot, what angle the camera man should be shooting whilst Denis is gliding the folder over to, this is where the production could look fairly professional by having cuts between shots perfectly and having everything running smoothly.

What good pointers have we picked up that we intend to carry to main production?

Well some of the main points that we have defiantly realised that we need to plan every little step from the first scene to the last scene, as through this we will be able to make the prefect production.
The main one that we will be carrying through I think will be the time management as this will definitely be a major factor as the next project is going to be a big one as it is our main coursework piece which needs to be more details and be of higher expectations.
Analysis of opening sequence (Saw 1)

In the opening sequence there is a man inside of a dark distorted room in a bath tub asleep, suddenly a blue light appears and he wakes up choking on the water in shock, as his head arises from the water, the blue light suddenly disappears into the bathtubs piping, he then starts screaming as if a child where In pain, then suddenly hears a voice in the background saying “there’s is no point I have tried” then the guy that was in the bathtub demands that the lights are turned on, as he has been in darkness for so long the lights hurt his eyes as he once again screams in pain, then repetitively starts swearing as he sees his leg tied to piping alongside the wall & sees a dead man on the floor and demands for answers, this was in the first scene which is approximately 3 and a half minutes long.
The two main characters introduced to the film are the guy that was tied up in the bath tub and the other guy which is opposite him on the wall tied up their, these where the only two characters introduced in the opening sequence.
The characters have been constructed in a weird atmosphere and the audience couldn’t really related to them as no-one would or could of possibly been in such a position, once the characters have been seen in these circumstances it makes us suddenly wonder, why are there two men tied on walls and why is their a dead guy in the middle etc which gets us thinking and once we start thinking like this the hermeneutic code takes place as we start to put bits and pieces together which starts to gain out interests and makes us want to know more about the movie which will gradually maintain our interest.
The opening sequence setting refers to us that the person tormenting these people has to be a cruel and twisted person as they are locking in a shower room kind of place which is full of broken tiles and random accessories such as bathtubs to make us feel that something gruesome is about to happen as there is already a dead guy on the floor, but the setting is ideal for the kind of tormenting that takes place within the film as it is a deserted place.
The first main shot is a close up to allow us to see that there is a man in the bathtub and then suddenly turns into an extreme close up to show us what his reaction will be to the blue light and being in a bath tub, once he gets up from the bath tub and is on the floor and demands the lights to be turned on and shows a worms eye view which shows his vulnerability to the situation and to the surrounding.
There is slight sounds of water ripples slashing against the bath tubs & which turns into a gasp of air as he wakes up due to the light, panting and choking noises are made also as it shows that he was being held down by the water stopper, loud shouting noises of help are cried out as everything goes silent all you can hear is the cry of help echo around the room, he talks to himself in a manner as if he thinks he is dead as he hears a silent but deep voice saying “ your not dead” he demands for light to be turned on in a deep stern voice, distorted non diagetic noises on a high pitch are made as he creeps over to the body slowly, tempo gets faster as different shots of the dead body and the room is shown & once he sees that the there is no physical way out he screams louder for help, if you watch the movie abit longer you can see that jamming is used, which shows us that there is no physical way that these two can leave with inflicting pain on themselves or others.
Opening credits are displayed in a dark atmosphere with gory, high pitched sounds in the background of knives sharpening, the font of the text is ideal as the pain parts such as twisted production is placed in the centre with large font to make it stand out from anything else in the shot & the colour also used is ideal as it is dark shading colours with a hint of red.
